Hey there! My name is Pat McHeffey and I'm the guy behind Gathered. I live here in Patchogue with my wife and son and I created this business to help make Patchogue a more vibrant, sustainable village.
Study after study has been underscoring what many of us knew all along: bigger businesses are not always better; indeed, they are often detrimental to our hometowns, siphoning our dollars away and leaving our storefronts vacant. We, here in Patchogue, know this as well as anybody.
The Institute for Local Self Reliance (ILSR) recently summarized the four main arguments for local, independent businesses:
- Local small businesses are linked to higher incomes and less inequality.
- Entrepreneurship fuels job creation.
- Independent businesses generate more tax revenue at lower public cost.
- Local businesses foster community cohesion and well-being.Community-scaled businesses reduce pollution and improve environmental sustainability.
Call it nostalgic, but I believe in a world where everybody has a realistic opportunity to run a small business in their hometown - supported by their friends, neighbors, and family. I believe in a world where a thriving downtown is not just a collection of high end restaurants and bars, but rather a bustling collection of merchants supplying their community with useful products.
This is the world I want to live in - it's the world I want my son to grow up in - and it begins by creating a simple, direct connection between you, the customer, and all of the folks nearby producing good products.
